Susan R. Stockstill - Of Counsel

Practice:

Ms. Stockstill received her undergraduate degree from the University of Louisville in 1972 and her juris doctorate degree in 1976 from Louisiana State University, where she served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Louisiana Law Review.

Upon graduation, she practiced for two years with Stone, Pigman, Walther, Wittman & Hutchinson in New Orleans, and in 1978, moved to New Mexico and joined the Modrall Sperling firm.  She took a sabbatical from the firm from 1998 to 2004 and now works in the firm's Santa Fe office.

Her primary areas of practice are natural resources, state and local taxation, and antitrust.  Ms. Stockstill prepares acquisition, drilling, and division order title opinions for natural resources clients in the San Juan and Permian basins.  She has extensive real estate experience, having represented Santa Fe Pacific Gold Corporation and The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company in what was then the largest tax-free exchange ever completed under §1031 of the Internal Revenue Code.  She also assists clients with issues involving taxation by the State of New Mexico and its subdivisions.

During the 1980-1981 academic years, Ms. Stockstill served as a visiting assistant professor of law at the University of New Mexico Law School.  She has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Albuquerque Bar Association, and of the Antitrust and Commercial Litigation Section of the State Bar of New Mexico.  She is a member of the New Mexico Bar Foundation, and of the Antitrust, Taxation, and Litigation Sections of the American Bar Association.  She has given presentations on oil and gas, anti-trust, and complex litigation issues to groups including the American Bar Association, the American Association of Petroleum Landmen, the New Mexico State Bar Association and others.  She is the co-author of Oil and Gas Development on Indian Lands, Shifting Sovereignties in the Oil Patch, 45th Southwestern Legal Foundation Institute on Oil & Gas Law and Taxation (1994).

Ms. Stockstill is also an artist, painting Southwestern landscapes and still lifes in oils.  She also restores vintage pickup trucks and hand paints them in Southwestern motifs.
