Cultural Property Law

May 01, 2004

Summary
Modrall Sperling shareholders Walter E. Stern and Stan N. Harris have recently co-authored (with two others) an American Bar Association-published book, Cultural Property Law: A Practitioner's Guide to the Management, Protection, and Preservation of Heritage Resources (2004). Cultural property includes shipwrecks (of which there are many in the desert Southwest), historic properties and "traditional cultural properties," the latter of which is defined to include sacred and other sites of cultural significance to Native Americans. The book provides attorneys, public lands users, resource and land managers, public interest groups, and others with a practical guide to the myriad civil and criminal laws designed to protect or manage cultural properties, and includes chapters on such key areas of practice as federal lands management; state, tribal, local, and private lands managment; federal management of underwater resources; and museum administration and collections management; among other topics.
