Roberta Cooper Ramo Receives Inaugural Harvard Honor

The Harvard Law School Center on the Legal Profession, a leading academic research institution studying the legal profession, announced that it will award its inaugural Award for Professional Excellence to Modrall Sperling partner Roberta Cooper Ramo, celebrating “her pioneering role as the first female President of both the American Bar Association and the American Law Institute.”

As the President of the American Bar Association from 1995 to 1996, Ramo was the first woman to lead the largest nationwide organization of attorneys. Ramo serves as the first woman President of The American Law Institute, elected in 2008.  In 2011, she was elected into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

A Fellow of both the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and the American Bar Foundation, she has also served as a panel member for the American Arbitration Association. In 2013, Ramo was elected Board Chair of Think New Mexico, a non-partisan think tank. She serves as a member of the Boards of The Santa Fe Opera and Albuquerque Economic Development.

Ramo was appointed by the United States Senate and served as co-chair of a committee to review governance issues of the U. S. Olympic Committee in 2003. She was named an honorary member of the Bar of England and Wales, and of Gray’s Inn in 2000. She served on the Board of Regents for the University of New Mexico from 1989 to 1995, and as President of the Board from 1991 to 1993. She also served on the New Mexico Board of Finance.

The Center on the Legal Profession (CLP) will host its First Annual Awards Dinner, honoring “Women as Lawyers and as Leaders.” In addition to Ramo, CLP will be honoring Mary Ann Hynes, the first female General Counsel of a Fortune 500 company, and Regina Pisa, the first woman to be elected managing partner of an Am Law 100 law firm. Paulette Brown, the incoming ABA President and the first African-American woman to lead this organization, has agreed to present the Awards.
