Bringing Joy to Hospitalized Kids During the Holidays

When the members of Q-Lead, an Albuquerque business networking organization, began preparing to put up holiday decorations for the pediatric patients at Carrie Tingley Hospital, they found the shelves barren of toys.

“In late October, when looking to see what decorations had been kept from Q-Lead’s decorating in 2017, one of our members saw that the storage shelves where toys are normally kept were more or less empty,” notes Alex Walker, a Modrall Sperling shareholder and a Q-Lead member. “Q-Lead has a strong civic component, and giving back to the community is a core part of our mission. One of our group proposed the idea of trying to do mini toy drives in our offices to help stock the shelves and we all agreed that it was a great idea.”

After the group finished transforming the Carrie Tingley boardroom into a winter wonderland, complete with kid-friendly trees, a North Pole, and a beautifully rendered – and completely faux – kiva fireplace with a roaring “fire,” they set to work stocking the hospital’s toy shelves.

Alex put out word of his efforts to everyone at Modrall Sperling, and the response was huge. Employees walked in each morning with toys under their arms, and the box Alex had placed outside his office began to fill. Some donated cash; others served as designated shoppers to help find the perfect gifts. One floor even elected to forego its traditional Secret Santa, choosing instead to donate the money they would have spent on giving each other gifts to the cause.

“The toys we collected at Modrall Sperling filled my SUV,” Alex says. “I had five 50-gallon bags plus four big moving boxes, full of gifts, all donated by Modrall Sperling employees.  It was wonderful to see Modrall Sperling and the other companies make such a great contribution to Carrie Tingley.”
