Roberta Cooper Ramo receives Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from UNM

Modrall Sperling shareholder Roberta Cooper Ramo received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at the University of New Mexico spring 2026 commencement ceremony on May 16. Roberta has had a significant and lasting impact on UNM and the state of New Mexico through leadership in education, healthcare policy, law, and public service. She served on UNM’s Board of Regents from 1989–1995 and was board president from 1991–1993, helping guide the university during an important period of growth and change.

Roberta has also worked extensively to improve healthcare policy and support vulnerable populations in New Mexico through her legal and nonprofit work. As chair of Think New Mexico, she promoted public policy reforms that enhanced quality of life in the state. She has additionally held leadership positions with organizations including Albuquerque Economic Development and the New Mexico Board of Finance.

Nationally, Roberta broke barriers as the first woman to lead both the American Bar Association and the American Law Institute. She earned the ABA Medal in 2015, one of the legal profession’s highest honors, and has received numerous recognitions for excellence in arbitration and mediation. She is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and holds honorary memberships in the Bar of England and Wales and Gray’s Inn.
