Stuart Butzier Becomes Vice Chair of the Mining Law Committee of the International Bar Association

Effective this year, Modrall Sperling shareholder Stuart Butzier became Vice Chair of the Mining Law Committee of the International Bar Association (IBA).  His recent and ongoing activities on behalf of the Committee have included: (1) co-moderating a February 21, 2021 collaborative IBA webinar on “Business Human Rights and Mining Pursuits;” (2) participating in a February 11, 2021 small group virtual consultation on “Force Majeure and Climate Change” at the invitation of the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment; (3) moderating the Mining Law Committee’s 2020 webinar on “Covid-19 and Mining;” (4) co-chairing a panel on “Minerals for New Technologies and Low Carbon Economies” at IBA SEERIL’s pre-pandemic biannual conference in Lisbon; (5) serving as the Mining Law Committee’s designated representative to an IBA joint committee initiative to consider “Model Climate Change Legislation;” and (6) moderating a panel presentation of “Comparative Legal Challenges of Pursuing Mining Projects in Civil versus Common Law Jurisdictions on the African Continent” at Paris 2021, the IBA’s Annual Convention scheduled for this October.
