Stuart Butzier Appointed to Two-Year Term Chairing the International Bar Association’s Mining Law Committee

Stuart Butzier has accepted a two-year appointment to serve as Co-Chair of the International Bar Association’s Mining Law Committee, along with Chilean mining lawyer Pablo Mir. The Mining Law Committee is part of IBA’s Energy, Environment, Natural Resources and Infrastructure Law Section (SEERIL).

As a member filling various other officer positions on the Mining Law Committee in the past several years, Stuart has assisted with a multi-section IBA initiative to develop international model climate change-related legislation, has co-chaired a SEERIL panel presentation in Lisbon on Minerals for New Technologies and Low Carbon Economies, has contributed Book Review and other published materials to the Mining Law Committee’s newsletter, and has chaired or co-chaired virtual and in-person seminars on Human Rights and the Extractive Industries as well as Legal and Social Challenges of Mining in Africa.

Stuart’s term runs from January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2024, during which time he will also be co-chairing, along with Chilean mining lawyer Patricia Nuñez, an International Mining Law Short Course that will be conducted in Santiago during October 2024, in his separate role as past President of the Foundation for Natural Resources and Energy Law (formerly the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation).
