High-achieving international moot court team from Mumbai coached by a senior partner at Modrall Sperling
At the urging of a talented group of law students attending Maharashtra National Law University in Mumbai, India, Modrall Sperling Vice-President Stuart Butzier agreed to coach their team in the prestigious 67th Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition in 2026. The self-motivated team identified and reached out to Stuart while researching articles—including one he co-wrote with junior law partner Sarah Stevenson, presented in Cartagena, Colombia in 2013 at a Foundation for Natural Resources and Energy Law conference, and subsequently published in the International Bar Association’s Journal of Energy & Natural Resources Law on indigenous rights issues, which were the primary focus of the moot court problem for 2026. The mostly-women team from Mumbai, comprised of Arohi Malpani, Shoubhit Daftuar, Simone Vaidya, Arnav Awari and Tanya Sara George, had an incredibly competitive run in the India Qualifying Rounds, earning several top honors out of the 65 participating teams. They emerged victorious to represent India among teams from over 100 other countries in the challenging World Rounds of the Jessup competition held this Spring in Washington, D.C.. Once in the World Rounds, the superb team placed in the top quartile of teams worldwide, including numerous competitors from the most highly ranked law schools in the United States. Modrall Sperling heartily congratulates the team members for their hard work and truly amazing successes, and wishes them well as they transition in the coming years to face exciting careers ahead of them in international law.
